İbn Haldun University held a conference titled “Palestine After the War: Current Challenges and Future Risks” on Monday, December 1st at 11:00, as part of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. The conference featured Mazen Al-Hasasneh, Member of the Palestinian National Council and Central Council, and Chair of the Palestine–Türkiye Interparliamentary Friendship Group, as well as our faculty members Assist. Prof. Ömer Behram Özdemir from the Department of Political Science and International Relations and Assist. Prof. Mehmet Emin Büyük from the Schoolof Law. The speakers addressed the current situation in Palestine from moral, political, and legal perspectives within an international context.
During the conference, Assist. Prof. Ömer Behram Özdemir in our Department of Political Science and International Relations, emphasized that solidarity with the Palestinian people is not only a moral and humanitarian responsibility but also essential for the prosperity and security of the region. He stated that Israel’s growing security-related actions in the region are being “recklessly escalated,” and that the absence of any international oversight over these actions is generating serious instability.
Speaking at the conference, Ibn Haldun University faculty member Assist. Prof. Mehmet Emin Büyük addressed the Palestinian issue within the framework of international law. He stated that international law today appears weak and ineffective, emphasizing that the main reason for this is the notion of state sovereignty. Since states do not want to accept any higher authority over their own power, Assist. Prof. Büyük noted that “it is extremely difficult to establish a system in which two sovereign entities cannot command one another,” which often causes international law to become dysfunctional. Recalling that the Palestinian issue has been brought before the International Court of Justice six times, he underlined that Israel is obliged to comply with the Court’s decisions due to its international status. Assist. Prof. Büyük added that Azerbaijan’s recent legal successes in the international arena create a positive precedent for Palestine, showing that “a just cause can indeed be supported and upheld globally.”
Mazen Al Hasasneh, Member of the Palestinian National Council and Central Council, and Chair of the Palestine–Türkiye Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group, described the situation in Gaza as an “asymmetric massacre,” emphasizing that Israel’s attacks targeting civilians have continued for 26 months. He stated that the Israeli government's main objectives are to depopulate Gaza, open space for settlements, and reinforce Netanyahu’s pursuit of regional power. Al Hasasneh underlined the need for national unity, a shared political structure, and a central authority for Palestine’s future, and emphasized that global solidarity has strengthened the legitimacy and international standing of the Palestinian cause.
